Subject: Community Support Needed! Yaphank County Property Master Plan Committee (Land includes proposed solar array)

Dear resident,

The attached legislation is before the Ways and Means Committee this Thursday, February 25 at 1pm. The legislation seeks to create a diverse committee to review the hundreds of acres of remaining County-owned open space in Yaphank to formulate a Master Plan for the future of the property.

As many of you know, Suffolk County declared hundreds of acres of wooded land as surplus in recent years and already sold 200+ acres to Brookhaven Rail Terminal in 2012. The Bellone Administration is  now progressing with a plan to lease dozens of acres to Solar City for the construction of a Solar Farm.

Legislator Browning does not support the continued sale and/or lease of County land in Yaphank on a piece meal basis, and believes now is the time to formulate a long-term vision and plan to guide County decisions regarding this property.

This Committee shall submit a written report of its findings and determinations, together with its recommendations for development and preservation of the surplus property at the Yaphank County Center, no later than one hundred eighty (180) days subsequent to the administration of the oaths of office for all Committee members.

If passed, no project to utilize, sell or lease undeveloped property at the Yaphank County Center shall receive final approval from the County Legislature or any department, office or agency of the County of Suffolk until thirty (30) days after the Committee’s written report is filed with the Clerk of the County Legislature. This resolution shall have no applicability to the former John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility, the Suffolk County Farm or any proposal to improve or maintain an existing facility at the Yaphank County Center.

Your attendance and support on Thursday is greatly needed and appreciated.

Sincerely,

Josh Slaughter, Chief of Staff
